My kids love ranch dressing. My daughter asks for a side of ranch dressing with practically everything. So in an effort to get them to eat more of a variety I like to season foods with ranch seasonings. Normally I’d reach for one of those all purpose ranch seasoning packets, but since my husband has been trying out a dairy free diet, I knew I had to get a bit more creative. And so was born this Creamy Dairy Free Avocado Ranch Dip. I actually made this to top off some zucchini boats that I’ll post later this week, but we loved it so much, I made it again just for the purpose of some delicious dipping.
As I mentioned, I wanted this to be dairy free. After some searching around the internet, I found this recipe for a dairy free ranch dressing mix over at The Pinning Mama. Bingo- I knew I had to try it. Most of the spices I already had on hand, so I had little to lose.
You can certainly scale the recipe to make as much or as little as you like. Keep in mind, just like any dry spice, you can keep it in an airtight container in your cupboard for weeks. That way you have it on hand any time you want to mix up a dip or even season up some meat for the grill. As Kimber over at the Pinning Mama points out, the possibilities are endless.
Once you’ve got this blended, peel and slice 1 ripe avocado and using a food processor, blend it until it’s nice and creamy. You could certainly use a fork for this and just smash it up, but your dip won’t be quite as smooth.
Add in a tablespoon of mayo, and also a squeeze of fresh lemon juice from half a lemon. This will not only brighten up the flavor of your dip, but it will also help to prevent your avocado from browning too quickly.
Now add in some of that homemade ranch seasoning. This seasoning mix is quite concentrated, so when you are adding it to your dip, I suggest starting with a teaspoon and go from there. You can always add more, but you can’t take any out once it is in there. I used 1 and 1/2 teaspoon and found that to be just right for us.
Give it all a quick whirl in your food processor and that’s it. This is a great dip for about anything- chips, veggies, crackers, pretzels- you name it. It would also be fantastic as a spread for your burger or sandwich.
As I said at the top of this post, I used this to top off some delicious zucchini boats. You’ll definitely want to check back later this week to see those! Really, this Creamy Dairy Free Avocado Ranch Dip is so versatile, you’ll keep avocados on hand just for this purpose.
